TU N’ES QU’UNE
CROQUETTE MOLLE
It had sat in a corner of the family business office for twenty-five or thirty years. A bar tabac ashtray from the 1950s — picked up somewhere no one quite remembers, set down behind a door, and forgotten. Its motif had never troubled anyone: a dominant woman tapping a pickle into a man’s mouth, to knock the ash in. A distracted, habitual, contemptuous gesture — no violence, just the ordinary exercise of power without even glancing at what you’re doing.
One evening, he took it. He said to himself: at least it will be put to use. He removed the rust, cleaned it, restored it. And in that work of the hands, a memory returned — a French insult, “croquette molle,” one of those that makes you smile before you understand why. He let things happen.
The piece says nothing new. It makes visible what was already there, in the objects we have learned not to see because they have always been there. That is the Objects register: not found art for effect — a way of looking differently at what we have decided not to look at.
What is banal is never trivial.
